Building A Venture Development Brief

A serious brief gives uncertainty a place. It distinguishes the opportunity from the assumptions that still support it.

Explain The Need Before The Proposed Form

An asset or idea is a starting condition, not a complete business proposition. Identify the people or organisations the venture would serve and the need it addresses. Describe why the opportunity matters in its particular setting. This gives a development conversation a purpose beyond the attractiveness of the concept or the size of a general market.

Distinguish Available Resources From Intended Contributions

A resource is useful only when its status and conditions are understood. Explain who controls the asset, capability or right, what information confirms its availability and which commitments remain conditional. Separate an existing resource from a contribution that the venture intends to obtain. The distinction helps prospective collaborators assess both relevance and dependencies.

The Anatomy Of A Useful Brief

  • Purpose

What the opportunity is intended to make possible.

  • Evidence

What is known and what still rests on assumptions.

  • Contribution

What is available and what is needed.

  • Next Decision

What a productive discussion should clarify.

Put The Material Assumptions In View

Record the evidence supporting demand, operations and commercial expectations. Identify the assumptions that could materially change the proposition and the specialist input needed to assess them. The purpose is not to eliminate uncertainty in the first brief. It is to make uncertainty visible enough to determine a useful next step.

Ask For A Defined Contribution

Describe what a first discussion should resolve. The requirement might be an appraisal scope, an operating perspective, a validation plan or a specific partnership contribution. Keep the initial account non-confidential. Further information can be shared once the purpose, recipients and appropriate arrangements are established. A focused brief creates room for a considered response rather than an exchange of general interest.

This perspective provides general development information. Project-specific technical, legal and financial judgements require appropriate professional input.
